Reducing our noise footprint

We are implementing measures to reduce operational noise in order to preserve the quality of life in neighbouring communities.

20% reduction in noise-exposed area

The Swiss Aviation Infrastructure Sectoral Plan (PSIA) sets a binding framework for air traffic in the form of a “noise framework” which includes:

  • A medium-term noise contour, defining the noise perimeter that must be respected as of now
  • A noise contour setting a target for noise reduction by 2030

Genève Aéroport has committed to reducing the area exposed to aircraft noise by 20% by 2030.

Promoting quieter aircraft

We encourage airlines, through financial incentives, to favour next-generation aircraft.

These aircraft have a lower carbon footprint. For example, Airbus A320neo aircraft are on average:

  • 40% quieter
  • 15% more fuel-efficient

SIMBA, the airport noise monitoring tool

We continuously monitor noise emissions from the airport 24/7 through our SIMBA network, consisting of five monitoring stations installed in neighbouring municipalities.

Connected to radar and operational data, it enables us to:

  • Link each noise event to the aircraft that generated it
  • Track aircraft flight paths

All data are publicly available and can be accessed online.

Reducing night-time movements

  • No departure slots are scheduled after 10 p.m., (except for three intercontinental destinations).
  • Priority is given to first-wave flight rotations to enable on-time departures and reduce delays.

Quotas to limit evening departures

We introduced a noise quota system on 1 January 2025 to encourage airlines to reduce late departures after 10 p.m. Once quotas are exhausted, night departures are subject to a highly dissuasive fee.

The system was tested in 2024. The results were positive: the number of departures after 10 p.m. decreased by 36.2% compared with 2023. In 2025, the formal implementation of the system led to a further 24.6% reduction in departures.

A noise buffer for aircraft

Since 2016, engine run-ups for large aircraft are no longer carried out outdoors but in a noise buffer facility. Smaller aircraft carry out their engine tests in another hangar built in 1985.

Soundproofing programme

We launched a building soundproofing programme in 2003 for properties located near the airport.

Since 2004, 4,483 homes (719 buildings) have been soundproofed, for a total investment of CHF 67.93 million.
